A research-grounded pathway for supporting emotional regulation in children ages 5–8 within blended-family contexts.
"Safety before strategy."
Before any skill-building can happen, the child's nervous system needs to feel safe. Trust-building is the foundation — warmth, consistency, predictability, and repair after rupture.
"Your calm is contagious."
Co-regulation means using your own regulated nervous system to help the child's system settle. This phase introduces shared breathing, movement, and body-based calming tools.
"Name it to tame it."
Once safety and co-regulation are established, we build the emotion vocabulary. Giving feelings names reduces their intensity and builds interoceptive awareness.
"Gentle nudges, right when they're needed."
With safety, co-regulation and language in place, caregivers can use brief, non-directive prompts in real time to scaffold the child's emerging self-regulation.
